
Our main goals involve us advocating for healthy life and success for people with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). We are also raising awareness about the risks and challenges faced by people with the Sickle Cell Trait (SCT).
The session was hosted by Agnes, and was graced by the presence of panellist and contributors from different parts of the world. The event started off with welcome remarks from Agnes.
Kw a warrior from Trinidad and Tobago gave a brief insight on Kidney disease as a complication in Sickle Cell.
Dr Rob from USA shared his insights on the Kidney complications in Sickle Cell, he stressed on the importance of Kidney screening and regular Kidney function tests in Sickle Cell patients and the intake of Hydroxyurea to help manage Sickle Cell and prevent some of the complications. He also was kind enough to answer questions from the panellists.
Dr Kasweshi, a renal specialist, Kidney advocate and Kidney recipient from Zambia also shared this back story on Kidney Disease, how it affected him and his journey as the first Kidney Transplant patient to be successfully operated on in Zambia.
Bukirwa a Sickle Cell warrior and physician from Uganda shared her views on the topic and expressed her worries on the challenges Sickle Cell warriors face when it comes to accessing medical care and management.
After a brief contribution from Desiree a Sickle Cell warrior from Belize, Mwape’s experience with Kidney complication from the UK was next, then followed by Monica from the USA and Toyin from Nigeria who both shared their experience with Kidney complications.
Rockel a caregiver from Belize join in and shared her son’s experience with Kidney complications and Ade a Sickle Cell warrior and pharmacist from the UK shared her insights on the topic and explained how different medication taken by warriors have different side effects on the Kidneys, why it was extremely important to have regular screening to monitor for any problems and other important key points.
The Session was closed with remarks on the importance of self-advocacy from Ginger.
